The other day, I wrote a column about the New Orleans Hornets name change, because I am apparently only one of 350 million people in the United States (and its outer-lying areas) who likes their proposed new alter ego: The Pelicans.
With that mind, 99Designs — a Canadian website — held a contest to design the new club’s logo, and this is what their contestants came up. (They handed out $714 as a prize, although it’s unclear how much of that went to the winner TinBacicDesign or whether any of it got spread around.)
The winner is above. I love it. It’s clean, but it’s got chrome. It fuses a little of the Saints’ gold-ness into it, which I think anything involving New Orleans sorely needs. It also keeps the colour pattern to a blue, white, and yellow, or at least gives the Pelicans a shove in that direction.
(Personally, I believe anything involving the Pelicans should go with the electric blue and yellow scheme, Chargers-style. Think about the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the MiLB. How sick is this hat?)
I still favour dropping the New Orleans and just going with the Louisiana Pelicans.
The pelican is the state bird of Louisiana. Whenever I picture a pelican in just New Orleans, I imagine it either covered in BP oil or shi*ting on Anthony Davis’s one eyebrow.
But, that’s just me…
Here are some of the better ones, although I’d steer clear of anything RED.
Simply, a pretty damn sweet design.
The hardest part of designing any logo is getting the font just right. It seems so easy until you actually try and put it on the page. Again, bonus points for infusing some gold and by somehow meshing the Pelican’s natural colours in with a modern scheme. It’s not bad at all.
Still, stick blue and yellow, my friends… blue and yellow…
Keep It Simple, Stupid.
It works here.
This might be the best stand-alone logo in the entire contest. It’s clean, but the Pelican’s mean. I’d take points off for the basketball below him, but it does complete the circle.
NOTE: Take away the basketball, and focus on Louisiana’s music. The Fleur de Lis is always a solid go-to, which is probably why the winner was the winner.
Does every logo need a basketball?
If the players wearing the jersey are dribbling a ball up and down a court and then traveling repeatedly without being called, we’ll know we’re watching a basketball game, okay?
Yeah, it’s super boring. Like, really damn boring, but keep in mind two things:
1) The colours are spot on, and you can always make the jersey itself more exciting than the logo, and;
2) The Pelican in the middle is shaped like a musical note. I’m assuming that was on purpose. More of these posers should take their cues from Mr. DSKY.
The more I look at this, the more I think… why didn’t this win?
Honestly, the artist even gave us multiple colour choices, and all of them could be re-done to make it look perfect. The Pelican isn’t mean, but he does suit the logo around him.
And, if you’re a purist, he still worked the basketball in ever so subtly.
If this logo had a musical number somewhere or even a Fleur de Lis at the bottom (again, I love the Fleur de Lis), it wins.
