Sorry, Andrew Desjardins. That Wasn’t a Match Penalty.

So, on Tuesday night, San Jose’s Andrew Desjardins received a Match Penalty — that means he was kicked out of the game — for what seems to be a completely clean hit on Chicago’s Jamal Mayers.

Mayers took a pass, wasn’t looking, and got decked. It was a good check. An excellent hit. Chicago’s Duncan Keith then went after Desjardings, which is not unexpected but still completely and hilariously ironic considering Keith’s resume. And, Desjardins got the boot.

Clearly, the ref felt Mayers received a blatant shot to the head. It’s a fast game, and it’s an understandable mistake if that was the case. Of course, if it was a head hit and if Mayers has to miss any time, it’s nobody’s fault but his own… in this case.

It may sound harsh, but it’s not.

Mayers has been playing this game for a long time. God speed on his recovery, but here’s hoping Brendan Shanahan keeps his monotone paws off Desjardins’ salary.
