Joe Thornton is one of a kind. This could be a bad thing, because “one of a kind” could refer to his multiple seasons of regular season dominance followed up by pitiful playoff performances. But, no, it’s a great thing… because, after 15-or-so seasons in the NHL, Joe Thornton finally seems like the player – the personality – he’s always hoped he’d be allowed to be.
From Joe to Joey.
According to The Province Blogs, Thornton interrupted his teammate’s Patrick Marleau interview with some lemming – after the lemming asked Marleau whether Tomas Hertl’s fourth goal in a 9-2 rout of New York on Tuesday was “showboating” – and offered this gem in return:
“Shut up. Have you ever played the game?”
Those in earshot turned their attention to him. He didn’t give them much of a choice. Then, he continued:
“I’d have my cock out if I scored four goals. I’d have my cock out, stroking it.”
Sure, it would be great if every sports journalist – oxymoron much? – out there would drop their reservations about hockey players (or all Canadians) having a little bit of fun beating somebody up, but if there weren’t lemmings like this, then we wouldn’t have answers like Joey’s.
And that would be a damn shame.
