Congratulations to the Suddenly Serious (and No. 1) Gonzaga Bulldogs

Congratulations, Gonzaga.

It’s been a long time since Adam Morrison sold you to embarrassing infamy with his three-point line sob show in 2006, when Gus Johnson delivered his greatest-ever call (“HEART. BREAK. CITY!”), and that’s saying something. Most folks don’t even realize you’re in Washington, because all they see is your name temporarily tattooed somewhere on their Bracket each and every year. They never predict you to win, but they always wonder how far you’ll go. Some years, they think you’ll win a game. Others, you’re the doormat in the Round of 16 for an eventual champion.

But, not right now. Now the Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the nation, until they lose ground to another rising star in the topsy-turvy world that is the NCAA’s pre-tournament ranking system.

But, Hell, don’t listen to my pessimism. Enjoy it while you can. You deserve it, for now.
