I have never cheered for the Washington Capitals before. I never had a reason to. I thought Alex Ovechkin — in his Hart Trophy seasons — was overrated and overhyped. Sure, he was winning awards and scoring more goals than Gretzky (not really), but I always knew Sidney Crosby was better. I always knew there were other guys in those exact season — Evgeni Malkin, Pavel Datsyuk, and (at the start) Jarome Iginla — that had a lot more to say on the ice than Alex Ovechkin.

The Setup:
And, here we have it… two of the hottest teams in the league, two of the most attractive underdogs to bank on, and the two most dangerous (almost solely) offensive squads in the Eastern Conference will meet in the first round, and only one will make it out. Given that there’s a playoff history here (the two faced off in 2012, 2011, and 2009), this could easily be an enjoyable Eastern Conference Final.

Regret is perhaps the worst part of anything. It’s that sickening feeling you get in your gut that tells you, no matter what you do from this point on, you’ll never be as good as you could have. You’ll always think about missed opportunities, blown chances, and a botched whatever.
For the Winnipeg Jets, regrets are a clear and present danger.

I’ve always felt that the worst thing the Washington Capitals could do was to stop being the Washington Capitals.
This didn’t prevent them from doing so, however, but it was tragic the way the Beltway’s best abandoned their previously terrifying identity, pre-2011: fast-paced and all offensive, all the time.
