It’s a serious question.

The 1-5 Winnipeg Blue Bombers will roll out Joey Elliott this week, adding another name to their roster of “not worthy of a jersey purchase” players, and another example of their long fall from grace in 2011, when the team started 6-1 and rolled to a Grey Cup birth. Although, again, they lost.

Elliott takes over for the underwhelming Alex Brink, who took more head shots than a blonde with a Clamato, and Buck Pierce, whose injuries cloud the fact that he’s just not that good a quarterback.

“Whenever you’re 1-5, people’s jobs are on the line,” said lineman Glenn January, to TSN. “We understand that we need to get some production and I think at the professional level you need no more incentive than that.”

The question now is not whether Elliott can play quarterback, but whether anybody else can. The CFL has always been a carousel at the QB position, with the rare few eking out a career that last five-plus seasons, they being Anthony Calvillo, Ricky Ray, Dave Dickinson, and then Hall of Famers like Doug Flutie, Ron Lancaster, and Matt Dunigan.

Even folks like Casey Printers, Kerry Joseph, and Khari Jones were booted out after stellar years, or championships, because it’s just not a league that allows for shi*ty play at a more than once-a-week clip.

So, if you live in Winnipeg and you can put a football in a garbage bin from 20 feet away – even if it’s only on the odd occasion – then head downtown on Thursday night. You may get to throw against the Hamilton Tiger Cats, and you may be worthy of a jersey buy.
