First, there was The Drive. Then, there was The Denial.

John Elway, former Denver Broncos quarterback and current team “executive,” made headlines on November 21 when he said, “No” when asked if the Broncos had found their quarterback of the future. (Their current quarterback is “phenom” Tim Tebow, who has won five of six starts despite the fact that he can’t throw.)

Now, Elway has said that he’s “surprised” by the negative reaction the comment spurred.

John Elway is the greatest Broncos quarterback of all-time and, after he retired with two consecutive Super Bowls to follow three losses in America’s biggest game earlier in his career, many were ready to anoint Mile High John as maybe the greatest quarterback of all-time.

Game-in, game-out, I can understand their reasoning, because Elway could get the ball downfield like nobody else, and win games…

Through six games, that sounds a lot like Tim Tebow. Keep in mind, that’s six games. SIX. That’s less than half a season. In addition, the harshest critics of Tim Tebow, so far, have been Broncos fans themselves.

If he’s here, who’s guarding Heaven? (Photo “courtesy” of TopFatLossTrainer.com … seriously)

Still… saying things like that never goes down smooth, John. Certainly, Elway knows that. I think we all know the comment was “unintentional” in its violence. Don’t we?

Still… give Elway some credit, at least for being able to admit that he was “wrong” or, at least, inaccurate. Because, when you ask a guy like Elway, “Have you found your quarterback of the future” you are essentially asking him, “Is Tebow as good as John Elway? Steve Young? Tom Brady? Peyton Manning? Aaron Rodgers?”

Anybody would say, “No.”

All we hear, though, is “ELWAY TEBOW FEUD”.

Maybe we should all just grab a book to read. Calm down, you know? I hear The Help is good.
